First part of a (hopefully) comprehensive tutorial on converting your color images to grayscale (B&W) - covering many different methods, and how to get the most out of the information in your images!
There are many ways to get a simple grayscale image from GIMP. This series of tutorials will attempt to cover as many of the methods as possible, and to present what the differences are.
I'll also outline a workflow that will focus on maintaining the highest tonal density across your image, and then to consider final "printing" of the image through various adjustments to arrive at a high quality final result.
